In 1932, starting out as an
automotive parts wholesale distributor, Sydney Gaines and
two partners founded the United Electric Company, Magic
Aire's parent. Nine years later, after receiving warranty
repair contracts on several GM car lines, the company set
up an auto repair business in addition to their
distributorship. This auto repair business was converted
into a retail showroom a few years later when United
Electric went into the retail appliance business.
An
opportunity arose, in 1945, to furnish evaporative
coolers (sometimes called "swamp coolers") to
military bases. These coolers were the first Magic Aire
branded products and sales were prosperous for the next
two decades. Problems with getting warranty settlements
on electric motors caused United Electric to set up a
department to rewind motors. Soon, the sales of new
electric motors boomed.
The
year 1947 saw Chrysler Airtemp appoint Magic Aire as
the distributor for 28 counties in Northern Texas and
Southern Oklahoma. Due to the small population in its
sales area, the company had to install their products as
well as service dealer accounts.
In 1955 the company moved its four
divisions, the Automotive Parts Distribution, the Air
Conditioning Distributor, the Magic Aire manufacturing,
and the new full-line Electrical Wholesale Distribution
into a new masonry building at its present location.
Two years later the company started
manufacturing air conditioner coils, marking the
beginning of Magic Aire as it is today. The Magic Aire
division has grown continually ever since. There were
more additions made to the building. The marketing focus
changed from nearly all original manufacturer's equipment
coils to its own line of evaporator coils and blower coil
products.
Stillwater Investments, a New York investment firm,
bought the family-owned and operated company in December,
1987.
While keeping Magic Aire intact, the wholesale divisions
were sold, allowing management to focus on the HVAC
business. It also allowed the division to expand into all
of the nearly 250,000 square feet of the United Electric
Company facility.
In
February, 1998, we became a wholly owned subsidiary of
International Comfort Products Corporation (USA).
In August, 1999, International Comfort
Products Corporation and Magic Aire were acquired by
Carrier Corporation.

Large or small, from the 1940's to the 21st century, Magic Aire has continued to
pay attention to its customers' needs, supplying the HVAC
industry with
High quality heating and cooling products, superior
service and delivery.
